World Day of Cities for Life – Against the Death Penalty
The Center for Peace and Democracy Development - CPDD, in cooperation with the Belgrade City Council, marked November 30th , World Day against the Death Penalty.
Through its initiative, the CPDD included Belgrade among 30 capitals and 600 cities that mark November 30th as part of the action – World Day of Cities for Life - Against the Death Penalty.
With the intention of expressing unequivocal support to civil organisations and movements around the world that fight for an irreversible abolition of the death penalty in their countries, believing that the Draft Resolution on the global abolition of the death penalty, adopted by the UN Human Rights Committee, will be adopted by the UN General Assembly, and with the aim of confirming the stand of the Republic of Serbia that the death penalty has been irreversibly abolished in the country, the CPDD marked November 30th, World Day against the Death Penalty, in two ways - by organising a round table entitled Death Penalty – Never Again! which was held on November 30th, 2007, at 10a.m. in the Belgrade City Hall. The introductory speakers at the meeting were as follows: Mr Stanko Pihler, professor at the Faculty of Law in Novi Sad, Ms Violeta Beširević, professor at the Faculty of Law of the Union University, Ms Silvija Panović – Đurić, Council of Europe, and Mr Dragoljub Todorović, attorney. The moderator of the discussion was Mr Ivan Janković, attorney, Center for Peace and Democracy Development.
In addition to organising the round table, the CPDD also lit up the Čukur česma monument in Belgrade, for a period of three days (November 28th-30th, 2007), also in cooperation with the Belgrade City Council.
