OFFICIAL USE OF LANGUAGES AND ALPHABETS IN VOJVODINA

Project Leader: Aleksandar Resanović
Associates: Jelena Mihailović and Marko Pajalić
Financing: Pax Christi, the Netherlands

There are over thirty different national minorities living in Serbia whose members
speak several different languages. This subject matter is regulated by the 1990 Law onthe Language, which is practically impossible to apply today for a number of professional, legal and political reasons. This problem is especially pronounced in Vojvodina. The basic project objective is promotion of the rights of national, i.e. language minority members to official use of the language.

The project lasted 12 months (October 2003 - October 2004), during which the
following activities were carried out: research and printing of a comparative study on the official use of languages; elaboration of a model Law; organisation of a round table for the presentation of work results and discussion thereon, especially the model law. Also, three instruction seminars were organised for those employed in education, the media and administration, i.e. judiciary.
